Childhood in a travelling context was characterised by the fact that the children were part of the working partnership. "Our children are our wealth", the Travellers used to say. Even Eilert Sundt, who did not otherwise have much good to say about the Travellers, pointed to the mothers' love for their children. Today, the relationship between parents and children of Tater people is still close and the family ties are strong.
The family was a working partnership, and therefore it was important for young people to chose a life companion who was of Traveller heritage and who could survive a hard life on the road.
