The role of the church

In 1578, the bishop of Fyn in Denmark sent a letter stating that no priest was permitted to baptise, confirm, wed or bury Travellers. Any burial of a Traveller would have to take place outside the church graveyard.

Without being baptised, one could not receive a passport or otherwise travel legally. Parents could be put in jail if their children were not confirmed. Not receiving God’s blessing also meant that you were not entitled to your fellow man’s compassion and empathy.

Thankfully, the laws were not always obeyed. Travellers participated in Christian rituals, their children were baptised, and they were buried in the church graveyards.
